Women in the Criminal Justice System
Discuss ways in which we can improve responses to women and girls with criminal justice contact. Consider the following in your response:
(1) Given the often extensive histories of trauma and abuse among women in the criminal justice system, what types of programs or initiatives may help deter the occurrence of these traumas (or at least encourage earlier reporting)?;
(2) What types of policies or training programs can be implemented to help prepare those employed in the criminal justice system to confront the unique concerns of women and girls?;
(3) Focusing on incarcerated mothers, should we incorporate programs to facilitate sustained contact between incarcerated women and their children, and if so, what should those programs look like?;
(4) What can be done to prepare women for life beyond jail/prison, both prior to and post their release?
